[12:57] * FireFly_9 is reading a webpage
[12:57] <FireFly_9> So this is what it's like when an author's brain implodes...
[12:57] <--=[ SpeedRcrX ]=--> Huh?
[12:58] <FireFly_9> Anne Rice... in apparent frustration with reader reviews on Amazon.com, has decided to retort.
[12:58] * // J_Daito // looks
[12:58] <// J_Daito //> That is one LONG block of unformatted text.
[12:59] <FireFly_9> Yes, you'd think a famous, highly-paid author would know something about the use of paragraphs and indentation.
[12:59] * --=[ SpeedRcrX ]=-- gets a gleam in her eye
[12:59] <--=[ SpeedRcrX ]=--> Hey why don't we "break it down" for her.
[12:59] * @spiritflame activates MiST mode

Seldom do I really answer those who criticize my work. In fact, the entire development of my career has been fueled by my ability to ignore denigrating and trivializing criticism as I realize my dreams and my goals.

[13:01] <--=[ SpeedRcrX ]=--> So my career is based on my ability to ignore people as I press on selfishly.

However there is something compelling about Amazon's willingness to publish just about anything, and the sheer outrageous stupidity of many things you've said here that actually touches my proletarian and Democratic soul.

[13:02] <FireFly_9> Anne Rice, a prole?
[13:03] <--=[ SpeedRcrX ]=--> DAMN Amazon for letting the COMMON MAN get their WORDS into the public eye!
[13:04] <GERMATOID> THAT F[BLEEP]KING GUTENBERG F[BLEEP]KED IT UP FOR ALL OF US ELITE PROLETARIAN AND DEMOCRATIC SCRIBES!

Also I use and enjoy Amazon and I do read the reviews of other people's books in many fields. In sum, I believe in what happens here. And so, I speak.

[13:04] <FireFly_9> No, you "type".
[13:05] <--=[ SpeedRcrX ]=--> You believe in it... except for the pesky talkback thing. Except of course when you're talking.
[13:05] <// J_Daito //> Because you are proletarian and democratic.
[13:06] <@spiritflame> can you feel the love

First off, let me say that this is addressed only to some of you, who have posted outrageously negative comments here, and not to all. You are interrogating this text from the wrong perspective.

[13:06] * // J_Daito // b[BLEEP]chSLAPS the text and shines a light on it "TALK!"
[13:07] <--=[ SpeedRcrX ]=--> I'll play good editor, you play bad editor
[13:07] <FireFly_9> I suppose we should observe the book edge-on instead of face-on?

Indeed, you aren't even reading it. You are projecting your own limitations on it.

[13:08] <--=[ SpeedRcrX ]=--> Yeah because we're not all as "gifted" as you.
[13:08] <// J_Daito //> Forgive us for not being able to quite see the lofty heights your delusions have led you to scale
[13:09] <FireFly_9> "read, v. interpret something that is written or printed"
[13:10] <FireFly_9> reading implies interpretation by personal limitation
[13:10] <GERMATOID> [RICE] SHUT UP YOU TROGLODYTE! YOU CAN'T UNDERSTAND MY GENIUS

And you are giving a whole new meaning to the words "wide readership." And you have strained my Dickensean principles to the max.

[13:11] <--=[ SpeedRcrX ]=--> "Wide readership?" Is she calling them fatasses or something?
[13:11] <// J_Daito //> To the MAXX Baby! Such superlative prose from the Queen of the Damned!
[13:12] <FireFly_9> CULL the Surplus Reading Population!

I'm justifiably proud of being read by intellectual giants and waitresses in trailer parks,in fact, I love it, but who in the world are you? Now to the book.

[13:12] <FireFly_9> There's a smooth transition for you.
[13:13] <--=[ SpeedRcrX ]=--> Who are we? The b[BLEEP]ches who make it possible for you to EAT, you moron.
[13:13] <--=[ SpeedRcrX ]=--> Forgive us our like, capacity for independent thought and s[BLEEP]t

Allow me to point out: nowhere in this text are you told that this is the last of the chronicles, nowhere are you promised curtain calls or a finale, nowhere are you told there will be a wrap-up of all the earlier material. The text tells you exactly what to expect.

[13:14] <--=[ SpeedRcrX ]=--> Ok so nowhere in the text are we told, yet it tells us.... OKaay
[13:14] <FireFly_9> How very zen.
[13:14] <// J_Daito //> Why is she rich and us poor?
[13:16] <Mdm_Maestro> This just makes me ache to experience her prose for an entire novel.

And it warns you specifically that if you did not enjoy Memnoch the Devil, you may not enjoy this book.

[13:16] <// J_Daito //> I don't swing that way.
[13:16] <.`~SugaBB_2999~`.> i enjoeyd mannich da deval...
[13:16] <GERMATOID> I HEAR HE COULDN'T WALK FOR A WEEK...
[13:17] <.`~SugaBB_2999~`.> i enjoyed ham bat i dad nit enjoi dis bok
[13:17] <FireFly_9> Well it did warn you.

This book is by and about a hero whom many of you have already rejected. And he tells you that you are likely to reject him again. And this book is most certainly written -- every word of it -- by me.

[13:18] <--=[ SpeedRcrX ]=--> So it's by an attention whore who likes talking about rejection?
[13:18] <// J_Daito //> Wait, if it's by a hero, yet she wrote it, she's the hero?
[13:18] <FireFly_9> If you accept that and the fact it tells you that you may reject it then she knew she would be rejected and so WHY IS SHE COMPLAINING
[13:19] * FireFly_9 's brain implodes

If and when I can't write a book on my own, you'll know about it. And no, I have no intention of allowing any editor ever to distort, cut, or otherwise mutilate sentences that I have edited and re-edited, and organized and polished myself.

[13:19] <--=[ SpeedRcrX ]=--> Oh yeah I think I know about it now if this post is any indication.
[13:20] <FireFly_9> Hmm, noble sentiments, but as far as I can see you seem to have omitted the editing, re-editing, organization and polishing stages...
[13:21] <// J_Daito //> Frankly an editor mutilating this would just be abusing a cut-up corpse.

I fought a great battle to achieve a status where I did not have to put up with editors making demands on me, and I will never relinquish that status.

[13:22] <--=[ SpeedRcrX ]=--> So you fought to be able to hack together words like any ol' fanfic author on the net
[13:22] <// J_Daito //> RELINQUISH, FOOL! RELINQUISH!
[13:22] <FireFly_9> "I, the prole, cherish my STATUS."

For me, novel writing is a virtuoso performance. It is not a collaborative art. Back to the novel itself:

[13:23] <FireFly_9> There's that brilliantly crafted segue once again...
[13:23] <GERMATOID> IT'S SO SMOOTH IT'S FRICTIONLESS! MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
[13:24] <// J_Daito //> (foaming at the mouth) Take help from people?! f[BLEEP]king ba[BLEEP]rds get away from my manuscript or I BITE YOU like LESTATATAT

the character who tells the tale is my Lestat. I was with him more closely than I have ever been in this novel;

[13:25] <--=[ SpeedRcrX ]=--> MARY SUE MARY SUE MARY SUE
[13:25] <// J_Daito //> Nothing wrong with M.Sing, but did we need the intimate details?!
[13:25] <FireFly_9> (dryly) Brings a whole new meaning to the idiom, "Bite me".

his voice was as powerful for me as I've ever heard it. I experienced break through after break through as I walked with him, moved with him, saw through his eyes. What I ask of Lestat, Lestat unfailingly gives.

[13:26] <--=[ SpeedRcrX ]=--> THAT IS BECAUSE YOU ARE WRITER AND LESTAT HAS NO CHOICE BUT TO SERVICE YOUR LUSTS
[13:27] <// J_Daito //> "Break through" eh, is that what they call it now?
[13:27] <// J_Daito //> rei.bot: Remember when I used to make you "break through?"
[13:27] * @spiritflame has deleted those files :P
[13:28] <// J_Daito //> Sure you have, babe. Sure you have. ;>
[13:28] <@spiritflame> ¬_¬;

For me, three hunting scenes, two which take place in hotels -- the lone woman waiting for the hit man, the slaughter at the pimp's party -- and the late night foray into the slums --stand with any similar scenes in all of the chronicles. They can be read aloud without a single hitch.

[13:29] <--=[ SpeedRcrX ]=--> (Aloud, in church) AND SO HE STALKED THE HOE, SLASHING PIMP DADDY JACK WITH HIS FANGS, LUSTFULLY GRASPING THE FEMALE AND PIERCING HER JUGULAR WITH INTIMATE BRUTALITY
[13:29] <@spiritflame> (priest) "Silence!"
[13:30] <--=[ SpeedRcrX ]=--> I call that a hitch.

Every word is in perfect place. The short chapter in which Lestat describes his love for Rowan Mayfair was for me a totally realized poem. There are other such scenes in this book. You don't get all this? Fine. But I experienced an intimacy with the character in those scenes that shattered all prior restraints,

[13:30] <--=[ SpeedRcrX ]=--> Dammit Mary Suing is fine, but we don't need to know the glories of your "breakthroughs" dammit!
[13:31] <FireFly_9> You don't get all this? Fine. But UNDERSTAND my intimacy at the least!

and when one is writing one does have to continuously and courageously fight a destructive tendency to inhibition and restraint.

[13:32] <--=[ SpeedRcrX ]=--> Yeah because it's SO DESTRUCTIVE to not show the reader mary sue GETTING IT ON IN GRAPHIC DETAIL
[13:32] <FireFly_9> Reading half the fics on the net, I would assume the tendency would be the exact reverse, actually.
[13:35] <Mdm_Maestro> (From Haruka's fanfic) "And Yomoko [Haruka's M.S.] pressed Michiru to the bed, covering her with kisses, knowing that ever since she had stumbled into her house amnesiac, this was all she could think of or dare to dream. Michiru, for her part, was stunned that Yomoko had turned out to be the vision in her dreams and not Haruka, who was all wrong for her after all. Such a tragic mistake had been averted! Gladly she yielded to the caresses, [Graphic Sex Scene cut], folded up like a pretzel still, she sighed in bliss.."
[13:35] <FireFly_9> ¬_¬;
[13:35] <--=[ SpeedRcrX ]=--> s[BLEEP]t

Getting really close to the subject matter is the achievement of only great art. Now, if it doesn't appeal to you, fine. You don't enjoy it? Read somebody else. But your stupid arrogant assumptions about me and what I am doing are slander. And you have used this site as if it were a public urinal to publish falsehood and lies.

[13:36] <--=[ SpeedRcrX ]=--> Suburban Senshi: Public Uranal since 2002
[13:36] <// J_Daito //> Uranus: Urinal...
[13:36] <--=[ SpeedRcrX ]=--> f[BLEEP]k off... wait. You can use urinals to publish? She's GOOD!
[13:37] <FireFly_9> How can an *assumption* be slander? Wouldn't it have to be an *assertion*?
[13:37] <// J_Daito //> DON'T BUG ME about DICTION I am a WRITER

I'll never challenge your democratic freedom to do so, and yes, I'm answering you,

[13:38] <FireFly_9> So... you contradict yourself in the span of ONE SENTENCE
[13:38] <// J_Daito //> "Your democratic?" I thought she WAS A democratic prole.
[13:38] <--=[ SpeedRcrX ]=--> That would be das Hypocrisy again.

but for what it's worth, be assured of the utter contempt I feel for you, especially those of you who post anonymously (and perhaps repeatedly?) and how glad I am that this book is the last one in a series that has invited your hateful and ugly responses. Now, to return to the narrative in question:

[13:39] <--=[ SpeedRcrX ]=--> Not as glad as the readers I'm sure
[13:39] <// J_Daito //> Umm I thought this REPLY was the narrative in question?
[13:40] <FireFly_9> This isn't stream of consciousness, it's barely a trickle...

...I leave it to readers to discover how this complex and intricate novel establishes itself within a unique, if not unrivalled series of book. There are things to be said. And there is pleasure to be had. And readers will say wonderful things about Blood Canticle and they already are.

[13:41] <--=[ SpeedRcrX ]=--> If you're leaving it to the readers why are you b[BLEEP]ching?
[13:42] <FireFly_9> There are things to learn. And. I. Will. Say. Them. Like this.
[13:42] <// J_Daito //> Rice. meets. Shatner.
[13:43] <GERMATOID> READERS ARE PRAISING THE CANTICLE DAMMIT! PRAISE THE CANTICLE!

There are readers out there and plenty of them who cherish the individuality of each of the chronicles which you so flippantly condemn. They can and do talk circles around you. And I am warmed by their response.

[13:43] <--=[ SpeedRcrX ]=--> I burn their praise perfectly!
[13:44] <FireFly_9> They are Wonderful because they conform!
[13:44] <GERMATOID> WHY CAN;T YOU PUNKS BE LIKE THEM WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY
[13:47] <FireFly_9> Anne Rice looks like she will have a fine future posting in discussion forums.
[13:47] <--=[ SpeedRcrX ]=--> LOL if she posted like this in the Genvid forums her ass would probably be banned LOL
[13:48] <@spiritflame> same goes for us too
[13:48] <--=[ SpeedRcrX ]=--> yeah but the difference is WE KNOW THIS and she doesn't
[13:48] <--=[ SpeedRcrX ]=--> She thinks she is the s[BLEEP]t
[13:49] <--=[ SpeedRcrX ]=--> Would someone who is the s[BLEEP]t have a s[BLEEP]tty persona?
[13:49] <FireFly_9> A question for the ages.
